We’re now at the halfway point of 2024 and to mark this, the team at Aedifice has started to reflect on some of the popular care home design trends that have emerged over the past year, and why they have been so sought-after.

Let’s explore the top five care home design trends and how they might work for your next care home construction project.

Biophilic design

Take a leaf out of nature’s book with biophilic design.

Nature-inspired decor has taken root in all spheres of interior design over the past few years, and care homes have been no exception. Incorporating natural elements into design features seeks to emulate the calming, positive and mood-boosting effect that nature is thought to have on humans.

Biophilic design could be as obvious as introducing plant life through living walls and gardens but is often done in more subtle ways such as using curved lines, wooden furniture, earthy hues, natural light or prints that feature flora and fauna.

Sustainability

Everyone’s talking about sustainability and for good reason. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges humanity faces at the moment and so it’s no wonder that incorporating eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices has become more commonplace in the design world.

Whether it’s energy efficiency, water conservation techniques or the use of recycled materials, many of these practices are better for both the pocket and the planet. Sustainability is also growing in importance in the public arena too, with many people on the lookout for businesses and facilities that are taking these future-facing steps.

Integrated technology

Technology is a fast-developing tool that can make the lives of residents safer, more convenient and more enjoyable. Moving with the times also ensures your new care home isn’t left behind or feels a little too outdated to be enticing.

Technology can be incorporated in many useful ways including in security systems to protect residents and keep track of their location, in video conferencing facilities to help residents connect to loved ones, or even automated furniture and lighting for that extra bit of independence and autonomy.

Wellness

Moving into a care home doesn’t mean that mobility has to go out of the window. There has recently been a rise in care homes and retirement villages incorporating wellness and fitness facilities on-site to encourage residents to stay active and mobile. This maintenance of physical health can also positively influence mental health and outlook too.

Whether it’s hydrotherapy units, a gym or a spa, there are many ways you can safely provide wellness facilities depending on the needs and abilities of your particular residents.

Personalised spaces

Care homes can sometimes feel a little impersonal which is why personalisation goes a long way. This approach takes into consideration that each resident will have their own physical and cognitive abilities, not to mention their own design tastes.

Creating flexible spaces that allow for this adaptability depending on the resident is a really appealing prospect, allowing each resident to feel like their needs and individuality are supported. This might mean allowing space for furniture from residents’ current homes or giving them options to switch out certain pieces in favour of others.
